Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Mountain Madness, a unique trail race series that blends traditional trail running with the challenge of orienteering, all set against the stunning backdrop of the Colorado wilderness.
My name is Daniel Taylor, and I’m the founder and race director of Mountain Madness. As an elementary school teacher by profession, organizing these events is a passion project born from my deep love for trail racing and orienteering.
The inspiration for Mountain Madness comes from my years of experience participating in similar events in the United Kingdom, where this type of adventure racing is far more common. Key influences include the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM), Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon, and the Peak Raid series—all of which my wife and I have competed in extensively. These events inspired us to bring a similar style of challenging, map-based mountain racing to Colorado.
Our inaugural race, Mountain Madness Spring Survival, was held in May 2025. One piece of feedback we heard repeatedly was surprise over whether the event was “real.” Let me reassure you: this is a fully legitimate, sanctioned event. Mountain Madness races are permitted through the appropriate State Parks, fully insured, and always include at least one team member certified in Wilderness First Aid. I also collaborate closely with a local race director to ensure a professional and safe experience for all participants.
Whether you’re new to orienteering or a seasoned competitor, Mountain Madness offers an exciting opportunity to test your navigation skills, endurance, and love for the outdoors.
I hope you’ll consider joining us for an upcoming event—we’d love to see you out on the course!
