Important Info

PLEASE READ THOROUGHLY!!!

This is your homework. You must read through this page in order to be ready and eligible for any Mountain Madness race event.

Event Setup

Mountain Madness events are either a 3-hour (Gentle Grizzly), or 5-hour (Savage Grizzly) orienteering trail race and navigation event where participants use a map and compass to find checkpoints spread across a natural terrain.

  • Competitors must choose their own routes between checkpoints, balancing speed and efficient navigation.
  • Mountain Madness uses a score format, where checkpoints have different point values, and racers try to collect as many points as possible in the time limit.
  • Penalties: 1 to 15 minutes past given time from initial start will subtract between 25 to 50 points depending on the event, 15 to 30 minutes past given time from initial start will subtract between 50 to 75 points depending on the event, and more than 30 minutes past given time from initial start will result in disqualification.

The challenge is a mix of speed, endurance, and decision-making, making it both a physical and mental test.

Required Equipment

This is a non-negotiable. Colorado mountains and wilderness can be very unpredicable, and you’ll be running unsupported (other than your teammate). Because of this, specific equipment is required through permissions from the locations we use for Mountain Madness events. The Race Director and/or volunteers will spot-check each team for three random items at the start of each event. If either team member is missing one of these items, the team will be disqualified and no refund will be provided. Read CAREFULLY the following required kit:

  • Waterproof jacket (with taped or welded seams and a hood)
  • Waterproof trousers (with taped or welded seams)
  • Survival bag (NOT a blanket)
  • Compass (magnetic and full size – electronic not suitable)
  • Headlamp
  • Whistle
  • Basic First Aid Kit
  • Sufficient food for the course
  • Hydration system (must have capacity to carry 30 fluid oz)
  • Trail running shoes or hiking shoes/boots (road trainers are not acceptable)
  • Mobile phone (For emergencies only)

Exceptional Weather Kit:

During different seasons, the following kit is required in addition to the mandatory kit list from above:

  • Fall and Winter Events
    • Spare synthetic warm top (hooded)
    • Warm and waterproof gloves
    • A warm hat (Buffs are not acceptable as a hat)
    • Full-length tights/trousers
  • Spring and Summer Events
    • Sun hat with a visor shading the face
    • Additional 30 fluid oz hydration system
